Community Education is informal and non formal education designed to build the capacity of local communities to engage in diverse, dynamic and accessible learning in order to effect change towards a more just and equal society.

The community education programme provides tutor hours to community groups to provide flexible learning opportunities for people in the own community.

Programmes are developed with community groups.

They are based on the needs of the group.

The time, location and content are agreed with the group.

How does a community group access tutor hours?

Community Groups may apply to the Community Education Programme for tutor hours. Each application is individually assessed. However, due to the volume of applications received priority will be given to:

a) Groups providing Community education programmes in areas where adults do not
have easy access to educational opportunities.

b) Groups who organise programmes for the following target groups:

  • Older people
  • Women experiencing disadvantage
  • People with disabilities
  • Travellers
  • Ethnic minority groups, Asylum Seekers / Refugees
  • Unemployed
  • Lone Parents
  • Men experiencing disadvantage
  • Carers
  • Ex-offenders
